The Ghent Port Company

The Ghent Port Company operates the port of Ghent. As an autonomous municipal port it ensures the presence of the necessary and appropriate infrastructure for a smooth flow of shipping and freight. Furthermore, the Ghent Port Company makes sure that a favorable social and economic climate is being set up for companies active in the port area or companies planning to settle there. The Port Company employs 160 staff members.

Summarized, the Ghent port Company creates sustainable prosperity and growth through the further development of the seaport to a multimodal logistics platform.

Whitemilk was asked to equip two meeting rooms with a conference table and the necessary audio-visual equipment. The intention was to create a meeting space according to the clean desks principle. Both tables were custom made. They consist of a stratified frame with removable panels on pegs. Below the table an integrated cable channel was installed, the top cover was stratified with Finnish birch (45°) seen on the edges. The tabletop was provided with space for the installation of Extron Cable Cubby's. The advantage of this design is that all equipment can be installed under the table and is therefore accessible through the removable pegs.

The tables are fitted with six incorporated modules, Extron Cable Cubby finished with brushed aluminum, which each consist of two VGA outputs, two sockets and two LAN ports. This allows a simultaneous connection of 12 portable computers.

In the table, under the top you can find an Extron switcher, type SW12 VGA and a Crestron processor type MC2E. The rooms were equiped with a projector, a projection screen and active speakers.

 General operation

The whole is commanded via a wireless Creston touch screen, TPS-6X Type Glossy White.

 "Intro" screen

An intro screen is always displayed when the screen is in standby. It shows the logo of the company. The user can activate the system by touching the screen.

 "Main screen"

This is where one controls the "active" system. When for a set period of time inactivity is determined, the intro screen will automatically reappear.

 Video controls:

This screen displays the conference table. At the side are the locations of the various participants. Up to 12 (or 10 in the small room) audio / video connections are possible. The connections in the table were numbered in accordance with what is shown on the screen. The system automatically detects which ports are in use. These are shown in black text. The connections without video signal are shown in gray. The user is invited to a select a video 'source' option. This can be done by clicking the appropriate location (regardless of whether a signal is detected). The system displays in blue that the selection was confirmed. After selecting the source, one can already perceive the audio through the speakers. Video can be seen by turning on the projector. The screen will also automatically appear. With these buttons you can still turn off the projector and/or manually turn off the screen (and of course turn it back on again) during the presentation.

Audio Control:

The sound of the selected video source during the presentation is played by the speakers. Upon starting the system, a startup volume will be automatically set, displayed via the blue bar. The user can optionally change this volume through the "hard keys" on the left side. Volume up/down and mute.

Additional features for operating the projector.

Using the "hard keys" on the right side of the screen certain functions of the projector can be operated. These include:

Digital zoom In/Out:

(limited) increase / decrease using the buttons 'up' and 'down'.

Lamp high/Low:

the keys "left" / "right" adjust the light intensity (2 modes).

Shutter:

Using the middle round button, the "shutter" function can be turned on or off. The screen will be suppressed consequently the system will consume less.

End Presentation

Using the button 'off' (or via the 'hard key: POWER'), the presentation can be closed. All equipment will be disabled.

Orientation of the table

With the touch screen one can adjust the orientation on the screen, depending at which side of the table one sits. This is done simply by pressing the middle of the table (black arrows). The table will always turn 180 degrees.

Help Desk functions

Some parameters used in the system can be adjusted via a web interface. This requires the connection of the Crestron controller type MC2E to the LAN. Access to the web interface is ensured via a browser, for exemple by the IT department.
